Rituals 02:53
I would pick all the skin from my face if it made me calm I’ve not toed the line between magic and obsession well I don’t think it’s unreasonable to assume you’ll hurt me again Took the Myers-Briggs swapped all my Es for Is And left me alone but not lonely So many Rituals So many little fires I’m on the edge again Hoping to fly Got too comfortable talking about misery Tried to depathologise everything that’s happened to me I don’t think that it’s reasonable to ask me how I feel I ask every day, the answer will always change The more I look and the moment you look away So many versions So many little fires I’m on the edge again Hoping to fly So many rituals So many little fires I’m on the edge again Hoping to fly

about

In Tarot, the card Ten of Swords represents a low point. It marks painful endings, deep hurt, and repeated betrayal. The card shows a figure, assumed dead, or at least trapped, pinned to the floor in agony, ten silver swords stabbed through their back. The EP Ten of Swords was written during Mouse Teeth’s extended period of isolation, that began with the development of a chronic illness, and that was extended and by the lockdown. This period of isolation provided space to reflect on illness, on grief, and the pain of being a woman in music and in the world. Each of these themes shape the record – each is another sword in the back.

Ten of Swords opens with the line “I would pick all the skin from my face if it made me calm” pulling us immediately into an obsessive world of ritual, blurring the line between the domestic and the mystical. The mystery of pain, both physical and emotional, sees Mouse Teeth turn towards magic in an attempt to find healing, or meaning. Songs and poems, dangerous in their honesty, describe the fragility of bodies, especially women’s bodies - their trajectory towards illness, ageing and death, and their vulnerability to abuse, commodification, and violence. The heaviness of this fragility carries through Ten of Swords, until a turning point at A Sword Pulled From My Back sees Mouse Teeth realising her own brilliance, and breaking through isolation to find that all she needed was a friend. Ten of Swords is a cathartically sad and angry record, but ends on a note of hope as a fast tumbling poem on love and acceptance hurtles towards the final line “these days I am in the business of loving”. Mouse Teeth realises the answer is found in connection and taking the daring risk, just as The Fool starts his journey by leaping off the cliff, to be open.
